Our task
The tasks placed upon the National Swedish Museums of Military History by the Ordinance (2007:1178) and its Instructions include:
1 § The National Swedish Museums of Military History (SFMH) have been given the task of promoting knowledge about the Swedish armed forces through the ages and
their role in the development of society.
The Museums include the Army Museum, the Air Force Museum and
the Swedish Commission for Military Tradition.
2 § The Museums shall, in particular:
1. preserve, catalogue, scientifically process and enrich through
acquisition the collections that have been entrusted to the
Museums,
2. maintain a selection of the collections available to the
general public, and carry out and support exhibition activities and
other teaching activities,
3. catalogue and scientifically process collections of military
or culture historical nature within authorities that carry out
military activities, maintain a survey of such collections and
support other collections of military nature in Sweden,
4. promote study and research in subjects that are covered by the
area of operations, and
5. work for increased knowledge, based on research and collaboration
with other stakeholders, such as universities and university colleges, and act as mediator for
knowledge within the field of operations. Ordinance (2009:740).
2 a § The Museums shall integrate perspectives of equality between the genders, multiculturalism, and the viewpoint of children into its activities, and it shall integrate a perspective of international and intercultural exchange and collaboration.

3 § The Museums shall also handle questions relating to traditions,
the maintenance of traditions, and similar issues in the military field.
4 § In addition to the duties placed on the Museums by §§ 1 and 2,
they may provide goods and undertake to carry out
research, investigations and provide other services within the
field of operation.
Assignment of certain tasks
5 § The Army Museum shall carry out the tasks within the Museums related to
landbased armed forces and the Swedish State Trophy Collection.
6 § The Air Force Museum shall carry out tasks within the Museums related to
airborne armed forces.
Collaboration
7 § The Museums shall consult the Swedish National Maritime Museums
to a reasonable extent concerning issues related to the maritime armed forces.
Management
8 § The Museums are to be led by a Director-General.
Special bodies
9 § The Swedish Commission for Military Tradition shall carry out the tasks within
the Museums related to military traditions.
The Swedish Commission for Military Tradition is to include two representatives appointed by the Museums, three representatives appointed by the Swedish armed forces, one
representative appointed by the Swedish National Maritime Museums, and
the State Herald at the National Archives.
The superintendent is the chairperson of the board.
Employments and Board
10 § The superintendent is the director-General.
Staff disciplinary board
11 § The Museums shall possess a staff disciplinary board.
Application of certain ordinances
12 § The Museums shall apply the Staff Representatives Ordinance
(1987:1101).
Fees
13 § When the Museums carry out the tasks as specified by 2 § 2, they may
levy fees for such activity within the framework of full
self-cost. The magnitude of fees is to be determined by the Museums,
with the exception of cases covered by § 15 of the Fees Ordinance (1992:191).
The Museums may levy fees for the deposition of items from the
collections as specified by grounds laid down by the Museums.
The Museums are to be in control of the income from fees.
The Museums shall provide entry free of charge to all exhibitions for children and young people up to the age of 19 years.
14 § The Museums shall levy fees corresponding to full coverage of self-cost
for activities as specified by § 4. The magnitude of the fees
is to be determined by the Museums, with the exception of cases covered by § 15 of the
Fees Ordinance.
The Museums are to be in control of the income from fees.
Exceptions from the Government Agencies Ordinance (2007:515)
15 § The following provision of the Government Agencies Ordinance (2007:515)
shall not be applied to the Museums:
29 § concerning the list of cases.
