Finally... the Swedish Air Force Museum in Linköping is expanding. Due to the expansion, the museum will be closed for visitors until the grand re-opening on June 12th, 2010.
There are currently a lot of exciting things happening at the Swedish Air Force Museum in Linköping. The museum is expanding and the goal is to create a modern technology and culture history museum that will attract all different kinds of visitors - from the airplane enthusiast to families with children.
In the new museum there will be a permanent exhibit about Sweden during the Cold War where the remains of the DC-3, that was shot down by the Soviet Union over the Baltic Sea in 1952, will be the main attraction. The DC-3 is a unique museum object and the remains are an important symbol of Swedish defence during the Cold War.
The new Science Center, targeted towards children and young adults, will have different experiment stations. Here you will, among other things, find out why air planes are able to fly. In the new building there will also be a library, a restaurant, room for temporary exhibits, and an auditorium.
The Swedish Air Force Museum has a unique collection of aircraft dating from the beginning of the 20th century up to todays JAS 39 Gripen. Most of these aircraft can only be seen at the museum. There are also a number of aircraft on display that have been produced by Saab in Linköping, for example J 29 Tunnan, J35 Draken, and the AJ 37 Viggen.
For children there is Flygverkstan (the Flying Workshop) where there are lots of interesting things to do and exciting flying stories to listen to.
