The Brigade Museum

The Brigade Museum (opens 2012)

Karlstad

Sweden’s Infantry Brigade Museum, which is currently under construction, will show the development of the brigade system, along with its component parts, infantry, artillery and other support functions. The intention is that the museum will serve as a natural national focal point for those interested in military history. The aim will be to closely co-ordinate education and research with culture and tourism.

The Cold War, the period from the conclusion of peace in 1945 to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, represents a distinctive era in world history. The Second World War thus in a way continued with the waging of a new type of warfare in which two blocs, each led by a superpower, stood face to face, with the non-aligned country of Sweden between them.

The development of the modern infantry brigade system took place during this period and this will form the main focus for the displays in the new museum, which will provide a framework for illustrating the events of the time.
The museum will also work together with the Värmland Folklore Society, who will provide information about a number of smaller fortifications that were built during the period of national emergency 1940-41.

The museum is planned to be open for the general public during 2012.

The museum will assume the overall responsibility for preserving the historical traditions of the Swedish Infantry and also retain a number of military vehicles for display purposes.
