Miliseum
Skillingaryd
The alloted units of the regular army gathered each year during the 18th and 19th centuries at their exercise fields, which often were located on open heathland. The troops initially used tents, but as the 19th century progressed a number of wooden buildings were built as messes for the officers and non-commissioned officers, as sentry posts and guardhouses, as kitchens and dininghalls. Towards the end of the century, these were supplemented by canteens and by company huts for lodging the troops.
One of the most well preserved hut collections can be found on the heath at Skillingaryd, where the Jönköping Regiment (I12) exercised. A shooting range for the Småland Artillery Regiment (A6) was added close to the heath. One of the remaining huts is now being reconstructed as a museum in order to preserve the memory of these military activities, spanning over 200 years.
The museum will also describe other military units in Småland and have the overall responsibility for the Engineercorps and fortification works.
The museum is under construction. A small exhibition is expected to open in the summer of 2010 and the museum in its entirety in 2011.
